In my latest episode of the INNOVATION Insights podcast, I had the immense pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Amy Prieto, a true trailblazer in the world of battery technology and a dear friend. From the moment we met at Colorado State University, I knew Amy was someone special. Her passion for science and her commitment to sustainability have always inspired me, and I am thrilled to share the highlights of our conversation with you.

A Journey Rooted in Passion

Amy's journey into chemistry and material science began at a young age, influenced by her family's love of learning. As the youngest of five sisters, Amy was encouraged to pursue her passions and excel in her chosen field. Her parents' emphasis on education and hard work paid off. Amy attended Williams College and later the University of California, Berkeley, where she honed her skills and developed a deep love for chemistry.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Amy's story is how she has seamlessly blended her scientific expertise with her entrepreneurial spirit. As the founder of Prieto Battery, she has pioneered the development of the world's first 3D battery, a technology that promises to revolutionize energy storage. This battery is faster, safer, and more environmentally friendly, setting new standards in the industry.

Innovations that Change the Game

During our conversation, Amy delved into the specifics of her 3D battery technology. Unlike traditional batteries, which are made of layered materials, the 3D battery uses a sponge-like structure that allows for greater efficiency and faster charging. This innovative architecture means that the battery can store more energy and deliver it more quickly, addressing some of the most pressing challenges in energy storage.

Amy explained that she was inspired by this design during her time at Bell Labs, where she learned to think about problems from a high-level perspective and then work backward to find solutions. This approach has paid off, as Prieto Battery's technology has the potential to impact a wide range of applications, from consumer electronics to electric vehicles.

Sustainability at the Core

One of the things I admire most about Amy is her unwavering commitment to sustainability. Throughout her career, she has made it a priority to develop technologies that are not only effective but also environmentally responsible. Her 3D battery technology, for instance, is made using non-toxic materials and processes that minimize environmental impact. This dedication to sustainability is not just a professional goal for Amy but a profoundly personal one, rooted in her belief that science should serve the greater good.

During our discussion, Amy shared her insights on the importance of slowing down and considering the long-term implications of scientific advancements. She pointed out that while rapid progress is often celebrated, it can sometimes lead to unforeseen consequences, such as the issue of battery recycling. Amy believes we can develop innovative and sustainable technologies by taking a more thoughtful approach.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Another aspect of Amy's work that I find incredibly inspiring is her dedication to mentoring and supporting the next generation of scientists. As a professor at Colorado State University, she works closely with students, guiding them through hands-on research projects and helping them develop the skills they need to succeed in their careers. Amy's commitment to education and mentorship is evident in the success of her students, many of whom have made significant contributions to chemistry and material science.

In our conversation, Amy emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the value of diverse perspectives in scientific research. She shared stories of how working with colleagues from different fields has led to breakthroughs and new ideas, underscoring the importance of teamwork and open communication in driving innovation.

A Friendship Rooted in Mutual Respect

As I reflect on our conversation, I am filled with gratitude for my friendship with Amy. I deeply admire her passion for science, dedication to sustainability, and commitment to mentoring the next generation. Our friendship has been a source of inspiration and motivation for me, and I am proud to share her story with you.

In conclusion, my conversation with Dr. Amy Prieto was a powerful reminder of one individual's impact on the world through dedication, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability. Amy's work with Prieto Battery is paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future, and her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and visionary thinking. I hope you find her insights as inspiring as I do, and I encourage you to explore new possibilities in your work and life.
